Respond to the following questions after reading the
article:
·
What new information did you learn about Miep
that we did not learn in “The Diary of Anne Frank”?
·
Miep claims that she was not a hero. What do you
believe about this statement?
I think Meip is not a hero she is just a common person with a common heart. Millions of others had done what she did but she got the lucky one which makes her more commonly known. I think Meip was courageous not a hero
ReplyDeleteI learned that Miep Gies was knighted in 1996 and lived to the age of 100 and died later that year in 2010. I think that Miep is a hero because (like many others) hid innocent Jews in World War II knowing that she will suffer the same conditions as the Jews if caught. Most people in our society wouldn't stand up to hide people knowing that they will get killed for it. Therefore Miep is considered a hero to me because she tried to save innocent lives, even if it meant that she had to die.
ReplyDeleteI learned that Miep had been knighted, had one child and three grandchildren, lived to the age of 100, and had saved one thing from the Annex (other than Anne's diary): an onyx ring with a diamond in the center. I think that Miep is a hero because she protected eight from death for two years, and she would have given her life if it had come to it. Even after the hiders were taken, she tried to barter for thier lives.
ReplyDeletei learned that miep lived till the age of 100 and she had 3 grandchildren. she saved a ring she got from the annex and saved Annes diary from the Nazis. I believe that miep was a hero because she saved the franks and the van pels from the Nazis for 2 years and wen they were finally caught she tried to offer the Nazis money for there return
ReplyDeleteI learned many things while reading the article. I learned that Miep died on a Monday in 2010, and that she was 100 years old. I also learned that she later went to the Gestapo for a bribe for all of the inhabitants of the Secret Annex, and failed. She also was knighted in 1996 in the Netherlands for her bravery. Miep also hid an anti-Nazi university student in their apartment as well. Miep and her husband were part of the Dutch resistance. Miep claimed that she was not a hero, but I think she was because she risked her life line as well as her husband’s to take care of the residents in the hiding place. It was law that they couldn't keep any Jews in their possessions, to report them to the officials, and if they didn't they were treated the same ways as Jews did when the officials found out. They were either sent to the concentration camps to be killed or executed on the spot. I think Miep did a very courageous thing, and she was a great hero.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that I learned about Miep is that she and her husband actually stayed with the members of the Secret Annex for one night just to experience the horrors of living in hiding. I think Miep is very humble with her statement, but she risked her life for others. She is definitely a hero, especially to those that she had helped to save. Not only that but she also tried to pay off the Nazis for their lives, which definitely shows her willingness to risk her life.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I learned about Miep that I didn't learn from the play was that she hid another anti-Nazi student in her apartment and that she stayed with Anne and the other members of the annex for one night just to see what it was like. Even though Miep claims she is not a hero, I think she is. She was brave enough to hide Jewish and anti-Nazi people without even hesitating to give them anything that they need. Miep knew that if she got caught hiding these people or even helping them out that she would be punished severely by the Nazis. Miep was a true hero.
ReplyDeleteWhen Miep Gies says she is not a hero I believe she feels this way because many others helped hide Jews in their homes, she was just better known because of the Diary that spoke so kindly of her. Also, some facts I didn't know about Miep is that she was born Hermine S. and adopted into a Dutch family. She also wrote her own book about Anne and her story, telling us the horrific journey of the family and her part in it. Miep and her husband Jan or Henk also stayed one night in the secret Annex to see how it felt living like that. Finally, she also hid an anti-Nazi college student in her home. Although Miep believes she is not a hero, I believe she is.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article, I learned that Miep also hid an anti-Nazi in her apartment and her and her husband lived in the secret Annex for one night to see what it would be like. Even though Miep Gies states she is not a hero, I believe she is because she hid many people from the Nazi's which could have resulted her in being caught and killed. Miep Gies was a courageous hero to everyone she helped. She was willing to risk her own life to save others.
ReplyDeleteI learned that Miep wrote a book called "Anne Frank Remembered" and wore a black onyx ring with a diamond in the center from Mrs. van Pels. Also, I never knew that she was born as Hermine Santrouschitz and then was adopted by a Dutch family. Although she denies it, I believe Miep was a hero because she sacrificed herself every day to protect the people in hiding. She knew that she could be punished and/or killed if she were caught, yet she continued to help the Franks, van Pels, and Mr. Pfeffer. She was lucky to be spared from arrest when the Gestapo came and took the Jews in hiding. Miep stepped up to the challenge of helping the Jews and the anti-Nazi university student without hesitating, so I believe she is very heroic.
ReplyDeleteI learned that Miep died on a Monday night at the age of 100. She had suffered a fall and died at a nursing home. I also learned that the West German government presented her with its highest civilian medal 1989 and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands knighted her in 1996. She had remained largely anonymous until an American writer, Alison Leslie Gold, persuaded her to tell her story. Her original name was Hermine Santrouschit. She had also hid an anti-Nazi university student. Even though Miep denies she's a hero, I think she is because she was risking her life everyday to protect the people in the annex. She knew that if the Nazis knew she was hiding them that she could be killed. When the Gestapo came and took the Jews she was lucky to be spared.
ReplyDeleteFrom reading the article about Miep, I discovered that she was the last one living of those who helped Anne's family. Also, I discovered that Miep and her husband sheltered a student in their own home. This was not brought up in "The Diary of Anne Frank". Lastly, I found out that Miep spent a night in the annex to feel what it was like to live there. I believe that Miep is a hero even though she says that she is not. She put her own life in jeopardy, to help those that needed help the most. She could have been killed, but she still continued to shelter others. Miep brought food and needed supplies to the Franks and helped keep them protected. This act of courage makes Miep Gies a longtime hero.
ReplyDeleteFrom reading this article about Miep, I learned a lot of new and interesting things about Miep. I didn't know that Miep was born at Hermine Santrouschitz and was later adopted. In 1987 she published the book “Anne Frank Remembered". I also didn't know that Miep had a son named Paul. Another fact that I found interesting was that they hid an anti-Nazi university student. Although Miep denies that she is not an hero, I think she is. No matter how many people risked their lives they all matter. She put here life in danger, to help other people. She knew that if she was caught they would have killed her. This was a great act of courage, which shows that she was a hero.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article I found out a lot of things about the Franks, Van Pels, & Gies' "The Diary of Anne Frank". One thing I learned was that Miep was originally named Hermine Santrouschit, but her name was changed to Miep when she was adopted. I also learned that she wrote a book called "Anne Frank Remembered". This surprised me for some reason because I never knew of the book. Lastly, out of the things I learned that stuck out to me, I learned that she was invited to go see Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands for her bravery. That must have been such an honor. As for her saying she wasn't a hero, I believe that she was. He rbravery and courage to stand out against society and do something that she knew would put her and her family in danger seems hard to do. Therefore she was a hero.
ReplyDeleteI learned that Miep had another family before and was not called Miep until she was adopted into a Dutch family. I think Miep was a hero to the people in the annex because she helped them as long as she could but to othee people in the holocaust no because she didn't help them she only helped the people hiding in the attic
ReplyDeleteWhile reading this article, I learned a lot of great new things about Miep. I learned that she was the last living out of the helpers, dying at 100 years old. I also found the fact that had a student in their apartment a few blocks away was interesting. I think that without a doubt, Miep is a hero. The courage she had to even do that for them is inspiring. She was so brave. And yes, other people did this too, but they are also hero's. What Miep did for those families was incredible. She stuck with them the whole time. Miep was definitely a hero.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article, I learned that Meip was knighted and had suffered from a lack of food after World War 1, like Anne, who had little food in hiding. I believe Meip was not a hero, but an extraordinary citizen like a firefighter or a police officer. She was just a person who had the intelligence and bravery to help people in time of distress. She had felt weak and betrayed in the first World War and could relate to the Franks and the Van Pels. Therefore Meip was not a hero, but a courageous citizen.
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot about Miep, but a few things I learned about was that her name was originally Hemine Santrouschit and she was adopted into a German family. One thing that I thought was really cool was that she was invited to go see Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands for her bravery throughout the Holocaust. Even though Miep denies being a hero, I think she is a true hero. I think that because everyday she risked her life just to save the people in hiding. She was very fortunate to be spared from arrest when the Gestapo came and took all the people in hiding. Therefore, Miep is a hero.
ReplyDeleteSomething i had learned is that Miep Gies was knighted in 1996. I also learned that Miep lived until she was 100 years old and died on a Monday in 2010. I believe Miep was a here because she helped hide the Frank's. Even though some people and Miep consider her as a person just doing the right thing, I believe she is a hero because she risked her life in hiding the Frank's knowing the consequences if the Nazis were to find out that she was hiding jews.
ReplyDeleteFrom reading the article on Miep Gies, I have learned that her name is actually Hermine Santrouschitz. At the age of 11, Santrouschitz was sent to be taken care of by a Dutch family and suffered food storage because of World War I. The name "Miep" was then given to her by her adopted family. At the age of 13, she became a secretary for Mr. Frank. Mr. Frank oversaw the family and gave them a job of manufacturing jam. I do not see Miep Gies as a hero because what she did for the eight jews was more of a favor than a heroic act. By helping them Miep should have been rewarded for her bravery, but should not be thought as of a hero of the Holocaust.
ReplyDeleteI learded that Meip lived a long life after WW2 and did many things, such as being knighted.Eventhogh she dosen't think of her self as a hero, Meip thinks of her self as a normal citzen doing something everyone should do. She felt for Anne being a young and confused girl in terrible war times.
ReplyDeleteI learned many new things about Miep, like that her real name was Hermine Santrouschitz. I also learned that Fritz Pfeffer was Meip's dentist, and that she was knighted by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1996. Finally, I learned that she and her husband spent a night in the annex to experience the terror of it and that they hid an anti- Nazi university student in their apartment. I think she ji sa heor because if the nazi's found out that she was helping the Jews, she might have been killed. I can see that she doesn't consider herself a hero because she was anti- Nazi anyway, but she did risk life to help people, which is what a hero does.
ReplyDeleteSome of the things that was not in the play but in the article was about her early childhood as she was adopted. Then she later wanted to experience the horror in the Annex by sleeping in there for a night. However that she claims not to be a hero, she is by far one of the heroes that took part of the hiding.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article I found out that Miep's husband stayed one night in there to experience the annex. I also found out that Miep went to the police station to bribe them out. The Nazi's did not arrest her because she was of Vienna heritage as was on of the soldiers. Although Miep claims she was not a hero I believe that she was a hero and took a huge part in the attempt to save Anne and the others. Although all of them weren't saved she still tried her best and made a difference in there lives.
ReplyDeleteI never new hermine was mieps real name. It didn't show in the movie that she tried to bribe the police at the police station. Even though Moro didn't claim she was a hero I believe differently. Even though she wasn't the only person to hide Jews, her along with many others are heroes.
ReplyDeleteThere was so much new information that I gathered while reading this article.I never knew that Meip had been adopted by a Dutch family and her real name wasn't Miep. I also learned that the Gies family hid an Anti-Nazi university student in their home. Along with this, something that stuck to me was how Miep said she never went a single day without grieving for the families from the secret annex that lost their lives during the Holocaust. Even though Meip denied being a hero, she was a hero to me. She risked her life each and every single day to help others in a time of need. She knew that she could get killed, but that didn't stop her from helping everybody in the annex. When Otto asked for help, she unhesitatingly agreed. That showed me emmence bravery, courage, strength, and heroism.
ReplyDeleteI learned that Miep was adopted by a Dutch family due to the lack of food in Vienna. I also learned that she was first born with the name Hermine Santrouschitz and then given the nickname of Miep. it was very interesting how Miep knowing she could go home and live a normal life spent two nights in the Annex to feel the terror that the families up there felt. Even though she says she's not a hero she is, she risked her life to protect and save these families from being taken, she helped them for 2 years to live and hopefully get out but they sadly got discovered. All in all, Miep was a wonderful person and hero by helping the families in the Annex.
ReplyDeleteI believe Miep is a hero because she kept the Frank family, the Van Dann's and Mr. Kraler from going to the concentration camp and while they were hiding, gave them their supplies they needed and told them information about what is going on in outside of the house. While reading more about Miep, I learned that when she was 11 she was sent to Leiden to be cared for by a Dutch family. The family gave her the dutch name Miep and then adopted her. After the families were captured, she traveled around the world giving lessons to school children who were reading Anne's diary telling them about the Holocaust. Even though Miep doesn't consider herself as a hero, I do because of all the great things she did for people and how much she cared for them.
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot of new things about Miep Gies from reading this article. I learned she lived to be 100 years old. I also learned she traveled around the world and spoke to people and schools about the holocaust and read Anne's journal. I think Miep was a hero, even though she thinks other wise. She risked her life to help other families. I think it was a very kind thing to do knowing she could get in trouble.
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot of new thing about Miep Gies from reading this article. I learned that she was brave back then keeping them hidden and helping other families. also I learned that she lived to 100 years old. Also I be-leave that she was a hero because she gave the families that were hidden in the secret annex all the supplies they needed. even thought Miep says she"s not a hero Istill think she was because she was brave enough to risk her life to keep these families hidden even when she knew the risk's.
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot from this article. I learned that Miep was not captured and murdered for helping the Franks. She had fallen and had soon died later because of injures. I think Miep was a hero because she did not have to sacrifice her own life to save the Franks. She could have reported them at any time. but she really does think that what the Germans are doing is wrong, and people should not be treated this way.
ReplyDeleteFrom reading the article about Miep, I learned that Mr. Pfeffer was her dentist, that the hid an anti-Nazi student at her apartment, and that she is Austrian. I also learned that she and her husband spent a day in the Secret Annex to feel what it was like to live in there. She says she was not a hero, but she risked her life and risked everyone to help people "unhesitatingly", which shows she is a hero.
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot from this article. I learned that Miep was adopted by a Dutch Family. Also I learned that Miep was not her real name but a nickname. He real name is Hermine Santroushitz. Also I read in the article that I thought was interesting was that she would go to schools and talk about the Holocaust. Miep says she was not a hero but I think other wise. Miep would risk her life everyday to help the families in the annex. She did not have to do that but did it to keep them safe plus give them food and supplies and lastly protect them from the police.
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot from the article about Miep Gies. I learned that Miep died when she was 100 years old. Also I learned that Miep was a very brave helpful women because she help the Franks and other Jews to hid and that could have risked her life. Even though Miep says she is not a hero, I think she is because she risked her life to help others out of the kindness of her heart.
ReplyDeletei learened alot from this article! first off to get started Miep was knighted in 1996,adopted by a Dutch family due to the lack of food in Vienna, also she was the last one to live that helped the Franks out and that she lived till she was 100 years old. i think she was not a hero but she helped the franks out alot if it wasnt for her they wouldnt make it that far into the holocast even though she was still risking her life i wouldnt consider her a hero becasue theres alot more heros in the world becasuse alot of people were hiding people in her house that dosnt mean that they are all heros because if they get caught they all die so its not really doing her any good but she is a really nice person for trying to protect the franks.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article about Miep's life I found information about Miep that I didn't learn from "The Diary of Anne Frank". I found out that Miep's real name was Hermine Santrouschitz and that her adopted parents changed her name to a nickname in Dutch "Miep". Also Miep hid another anti-Nazi student in her apartment and she wanted to stay in the secret Annex for one night to see what it was like to be in hiding. Even though Miep claims she wasn't a hero, I believe she was because she took a big part and attempted to try to help and save the Frank family and the Vann Dan family. She kept them a secret and could have gotten caught and in a enormous amount of trouble. Even though none of them survived but Mr. Frank I believe Miep still tried her best to save them and didn't ever give up!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I learned a lot from this article. Miep was adopted and her real name is Hermine Santrouschitz. Also, she lived tell she was 100 years old. Miep says she was not a hero but I have to disagree. She did everything she could to help them while in hiding. She gave them food, went out and bought them anything they needed. She didn't have to do that. The only reason she doesn't think she is a hero because they got caught according to what I think. I learned a lot from this article and Miep is a hero.
ReplyDeleteUpon reading this article, there were several things I found out about Miep and her history that I hadn`t known from reading the play. One of these things was Meip`s past. I knew that she was Mr.Frank`s secretary, but i had no information of her previous to that. From the article, I found out that she was originally from Austria, and was then sent to Leiden to be cared for by a Dutch family who later adopted her. On the opposite side of things, i had no idea what became of Mrs. Gies post war, beside the fact that she got married and was pregnant. It amazed me how old she grew to be, 100! Along with that, she also received several awards and recognition. Included in all of this, was that aside from protecting and caring for the hiding Jews in the annex, her job, and personal life, she also kept hidden an anti-Nazi university student. She gave so much effort, comfort, care, and time for such a good cause. I think that she was a wonderful person and an amazing role-model, so there is no doubt in my mind that she was in fact a hero. She was risking her own life for the salvation of 9 others who were being brutally persecuted for there religion, and the claimed 'cleansing of the human race' . She easily could have said no, she woudn`t risk herself like that, but she did anyway because that is the hero that Meip Giess was.
ReplyDeleteWhen Miep states that she isn't a hero, I think that she's saying that she was just another person with a kind heart to help a jewish family to go into hiding.Although, she wasn't exactly a hero, she was brave and couragous to risk her life hiding the Frank's because she knew that there would be consequences if she was caught, but she helped them anyway. All in all, Miep wasn't a hero, but she was brave and kindhearted.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Miep when she states that she isn't a hero because any kindhearted person would help the people in the annex. One thing that I learned about Miep is that she slept with the members of the annex to experience their fear. I believe that Miep is very courageous but isn't a hero.
ReplyDeleteI really learned a lot about Miep Gies in the New York Times article. I didn’t know that Miep was hiding an anti-Nazi university student just a short ways away from her apartment. I also didn’t know she went to the Gestapo headquarters and attempted to bribe them for the eight members who were captured from the Secret Annex. When Miep claims she’s not a hero, I must disagree with her. She saved eight lives for a couple of years then eventually only saved one, but I think anyone who saves a life is a hero, this making Miep definitely a hero.
ReplyDeleteWhatbi learned new about Miep was that she was adopted andnalsonduring her childhood she was nicknamed Miep which why she called Miep all around the world.
ReplyDeleteMiepnstates that she was not a hero. I think she is wrong. She is a hero. She helped everybody in the secret annex have the supplies that they needed to survive during the German occupied Amsterdam. She didnall she could until the day the people in the secret annex and what she showed was true courage and was a hero to the people of the secret annex.
Something new that I have learned about meip is that she lived to be 100 years old. Also that every day she grieve about everyone they lost and that she doesn't think she was a hero. I thought she was a hero because she did not have to help everyone. But she did do everything that she could do help them.
ReplyDeleteIn this article I learned a lot about Miep Gies. I did not know that she was adopted by a dutch family. she also got the nickname Miep from her adopted family. I also wasn't aware of them hiding a anti-Nazi university student at their home. I think Miep is a hero because not a lot of people would have done what she did. she risked her freedom and life just to help the Franks.
ReplyDeleteI learned that Miep hiding an anti-Nazi university student while she was also hiding Anne's family. I also learned that Miep was her nickname not her actual name and the Dutch family that adopted her called her by that name. I don't think Miep is a hero because she did something that was just the right thing to do. She did something that any person with a heart would do. She was very brave and courageous, but like she said, many other people did things that were ten times greater because it was immoral what was happening to the Jews.
ReplyDeleteBy reading the article on Miep Gies, I've learned many things about her that I wouldn't have otherwise known. Miep Gies' real birth name is Hermine Santrouschitz. She is from a Roman Catholic family from Vienna, later to be adopted by a Dutch family because of a famine in Vienna. Miep started working for Mr.Frank in 1933 and became a trusted employee and friend of his. And as Miep and the other helpers were hiding the eight residence of the secret annex, her and her husband, Jan Gies, hid an anti-Nazi student in their home. No matter what Miep Gies says, she will be viewed as a hero, along with the many others who risked their lives for those in need. Miep acted selflessly, not caring what would happen to her only caring for her friends. It was because of this courage and bravery that she was knighted and given the highest honor civilian medal. Even though out of the nine live she tried to save, only one came out alive, it doesn't matter. She put their needs and comfort first and had a place for them in her heart, that's what true heroism is. Miep Gies is undoubtedly a hero and her sacrifices along with the many other good Dutch peoples' will forever be remembered.
ReplyDeleteBy reading this article about Miep Gies, I've learned that Miep also hid an anti-Nazi college student as well as the Frank family. I also learned that she lived to be 100 years old. Miep also did not consider herself a hero. I disagree with her. She risked everything she had to help others that were in need.
ReplyDeleteFrom reading the article, I learned that Miep was not truly Dutch, just like the Franks. In fact, Miep's true name isn't even Miep, its actually Hermine Santrouschitz, and she is from a poor family in Vienna, Austria. Miep states that she is not a hero, and I agree. She is not a hero, however she is an extremely good person. Miep only did what was right by helping to shelter the Franks, Van Pels, and Mr. Pfeffer. She may have risked her life by supplying them with food and other things, but she didn't do it for some great purpose, she only did it to help out. The real heroes are the people that gave up something great for others or fought for others, however she remains to be a truly great person.
ReplyDeleteby reading this article on Miep Gies I learned her real name is Hermine Santrouschitz in Vienna, Austria which is a very poor. She was full of courage and bravery she hide 8 human beings in a office building. Miep is no doubt a hero she risked her life, breaking a law ,stealing, and lying for jewish families. I didn't know she was hiding more and that she was bornin 1909.
