Jimmy Hoffa

Essential Questions:

1.  What makes Jimmy Hoffa’s disappearance so strange and mysterious?
2. Why do people still discuss and research what happened to Jimmy Hoffa?
3.  What makes Jimmy Hoffa so intriguing?

James Riddle "Jimmy" Hoffa (born February 14, 1913 – disappeared July 30, 1975) was an American labor union leader who vanished, aged 62. He is widely believed to have been murdered. Hoffa became involved with organized crime from the early years of his Teamsters work, and this connection continued until his disappearance in 1975. He was convicted of jury tampering, attempted bribery, and fraud in 1964. Hoffa was imprisoned in 1967, and sentenced to 13 years. In mid-1971 he resigned the Teamsters' presidency, an action that was part of a pardon agreement with President Richard Nixon, to facilitate his release later that year. Hoffa was last seen in late July 1975, outside the Machus Red Fox, a suburban Detroit restaurant.[1] His disappearance gave rise to many theories as to what happened to him and where his body was hidden.

Research the Jimmy Hoffa and find as many facts as possible.  Use the following questions to guide your blog comments:    What are some new things you have learned about Hoffa?  What do you think happened to him? What evidence do you have to back it up? Any other theories not mentioned here?

  1. Ever heard the term "sleeping with the fishes"? Well that term is actually one of the many theories in the Jimmy Hoffa disappearance. Jimmy Hoffa was the Teamster union leader, an organization that "helped the little man" and fought for equal work rights. Although maybe the reason why Hoffa disappeared was because Teamster was less of a union and more of an organized crime ring. The unions strikes were so big that they could stop whatever they were boycotting from ever making it into the city it was being shipped to. Hoffa was a do-whatever-it-takes kinda guy, never giving up on a fight. which is why the theory of him just retiring was never really a relevant one. Unless of course he was "retired' in a different kind of way. Jimmy Hoffa dealt with many mob bosses and criminals, which consequentially landed him in jail. So what leads do they have on Hoffa's disappearance? Well...one. Which is that two weeks before Hoffa vanished, hundreds of millions of dollars were stolen from the Teamster pension fund. still to this day the "vanishing act" of Jimmy Hoffa is talked about mostly because it is one of the strangest disappearances ever and has so many theories."For years now, we have had the sense that stuff is provable and solvable. Whenever anything defies that, it naturally becomes the stuff of extreme curiosity," says Thompson. Jimmy Hoffa's disappearance may never be explained, but it will always have its theories.

    1. I agree with AshleyT2 about the disappearance of James "Jimmy" Hoffa. The reason is because Mr. Hoffa didn't like to not get his way and like Ashley said, if he wanted something; he'd do anything to get it. (http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/18/us/hoffa-mystery/index.html) It seems as though he never would have “retired” from his life unless he retired to death. She had very good points as to why he could have disappeared even though no one knows how or why he really disappeared. He had dealt with many criminals and mob bosses so it is very possible he angered one of them and they got rid of him. But, there are other theories as to why he disappeared. Maybe one day we’ll find out the truth.

  2. A man named James "Jimmy" Hoffa disappeared July 30th, 1975. His last known whereabouts were at a Detroit restaurant called the Machus Red Fox. It's very odd that he still hasn't been found to this day. Many fake leads were told to the FBI but no body or evidence has been found.( http://theweek.com/article/index/234027/the-search-for-jimmy-hoffas-body-6-rumored-burial-grounds ) This missing pereson case is so strange and mysterious because no one knows the truth about his demise. If he managed to just hide away somewhere he'd be 100, and he'd probably have told his family. His vanishing act hasn't gone unnoticed and many have heard of Hoffa's disappearance. It is strange that he didn't tell a soul where he was going or why he'd just up and leave everything behind. The mysterious part is that even now in 2013, some 38 years after his disappearing act no real theory has been made. Therefore, I believe that his disappearance is both strange and mysterious because he was never found and no one knows where he went.

    1. I agree with BreeZ2's comment to where Jimmy Hoffa disappeared to. She had very good points. Like BreeZ2 said it is very weird that they still do not know what happened to him. There are too many theories to what happened. I also agree that it is very strange and mysterious that it has been about 40 years and people still don't know what happened to him. I also think it's strange and mysterious that Jimmy didn't tell anyone where he was going. There has been many theories but no one will know the truth, but you never know maybe one day we may know what happened to Jimmy Hoffa! As if right now it's still a mystery!

    2. I agree with BreeZ2's comment on how jimmy Hoffa disappeared. like BreeZ2 said it very weird how its been 40 years and no one knows how he disappeared, I also agree how ShreeG2 said its mysterious how jimmy didn't tell anyone where he was going or even if he died its still weird on how he just disappeared and for his family is also really weird to not even now what happened to your son, broher, grandson any of his family members its just weird like if that was my brother I would find out what happened to him like its been 40 years how do y not know what happened to him! I think the disappearance is strange and mysterious because he was never found.

  3. The disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa was a strange and mysterious event. What makes this event so strange and mysterious is no one knows how or what happened to him. People believe that Jimmy was murdered, but no one knows where the body is buried! People still look for Jimmy. Jimmy disappeared about 40 years ago. The last time he was seen out in public was on July 30, 1975 outside of the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Michigan. People say he was nervous as he went to a meeting with suspected mob bosses. Others say they saw a mysterious car leaving. But the one question that is left unanswered is "Where did he go?" People still discuss this event. Researchers say that even if Jimmy Hoffa was still alive he would be 100 years old. My theory of the disappearance of Jimmy is that he moved away to a foreign country or island, got a haircut, and changed his name and passport. I think he got into that car so he could go to the airport or go get a haircut. I think he did this because he knew that someone was out to kill him or maybe because he did something bad and didn't want to get caught. That is my theory of how Jimmy Hoffa disappeared. This disappearance might never be revealed, but it will always stay a mystery.

    1. I agree with ShreeG2, I think that Jimmy was running away because of something and he was just in another country. It would make the most sense because if it was a murder there is always some evidence, but this was a clean case. No blood, no DNA, no suspects. So that must mean he got away, and wasn't killed. Jimmy was a big target for a lot of people, including the government. Nixon had told Jimmy to stay out of the union "business"(a.k.a. getting involved with mobs and criminals) and Nixon would support the Teamster union, if Jimmy got back into the union "business" while Nixon was supporting them it would give him a bad name and be detrimental to his campaign. Back to what ShreeG2 said, Jimmy probably got into serious trouble this time and knew he would have to leave, which is why it makes sense that no one knows where he is. If he was trying to vanish then no one can know where he went or else someone might "spill the beans". So ShreeG2 makes some good points in her theory, more than likely Jimmy just left the country.

  4. The disappearance of Jimmy was strange and mysterious event. He disappeared about 40 years ago so he would be about 100 years old now. they have spent over 3 million on trying to find him even thought he is dead I thinks it is creepy that no one knows what happened to him. he just disappeared. like wouldn't you want to know how your son died? or what even happened to him. everyone has rumors about how he died or disappeared. he might of moved to a different state and changed his name because he was going to go to jail or someone was out to kill him. But why would he want to leave his family wondering what happened to him I'm pretty sure his family wants to know what happened to him well don't we all. People are still trying to figure out what happened to him they might find out they might not. it will always be a mystery. the disappearance will never me revealed.
